15.  DATA STRUCTURES AND DATA REPRESENTATION

* Data Structures and Data Representation are in a database, operation, and file.

* Data Structure and Data Representation -- The structure of relationship among files in a database and among data

   items within each file. -- Any data representation and its associated operations. -- An integer or floating point number

   stored on the computer is a simple data structure. * Algorithm—is a method or a process followed to solve a

   problem.

* Algorithm Analysis—There are 5 steps:

    1. An algorithm must be correct.

    2. An algorithm is composed of a series of concrete steps.

    3. There can be no ambiguity as to which step will be performed next.

    4. An algorithm must be composed of a finite number of step.

    5. An algorithm must terminate.

16.  FILE SYSTEMS

* File Systems, File Structures, or File Organizations are in database, in computer, or on peripheral storage devices.

* File Organizations: There are 3 methods:

    1. Sequential File Organization—Records are organized in a particular order.

    2. Direct File Organization—Records are not organized in any special order.

    3. Indexed File Organization—Records are organized sequentially but indexes are built into the file to allow a record

        to be accessed either sequentially or directly.
